I wanted to provide you with an update regarding Burglary - Other (Shed / Garage Break-ins), which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Residents,
There has been another incident whereby a van has been broken into and power tools taken.
Please ensure nothing of value is left inside vehicles and they are locked and secure.
Follow the target hardening approach below,
1. Target Hardening: Making a target more difficult to attack, such as installing stronger locks on doors and windows. 2. Target Removal: Moving potential targets out of sight, like storing valuable items out of public view. 3. Reducing the Means: Making the tools or methods required to commit a crime less available, such as removing the ability to easily vandalise property. 4. Reducing the Payoff: Decreasing the potential profit from a crime, for example, by using security marking on property so it is harder to sell. 5. Access Control: Limiting access to a specific area or object. This can include using security guards, barriers, or simply locking doors and gates. 6. Surveillance: Increasing the likelihood of a crime being witnessed. This can be achieved through physical security measures like CCTV, or informal measures like neighbourhood watch programs. 7. Environmental Change: Modifying the environment to deter crime. This includes making an area look well-maintained, with good lighting and clear sight lines, to encourage natural surveillance. 8. Rule Setting: Establishing rules and posting signage to guide behaviour and deter crime. Examples include "no parking" signs or rules about loitering. 9. Increase the Chances of Being Caught:Implementing measures that increase the risk of an offender being detected, arrested, or identified, such as installing monitored alarm systems or using security cameras. 10. Deflecting Offenders: Diverting offenders away from potential targets. This can be done by creating barriers that redirect them to a different area or by providing them with alternative, non-criminal activities.
Remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity via 101.
Any CCTV that has captured anything suspicious activity during the early morning of 23/11/2025 can also be sent in via 101 or social media platforms.
Burglary is a particularly invasive crime that can have a lasting impact on victims. If you have been a victim and need support and help, you should have been offered the services of Victim Support. You may have declined at the time, or not noticed the offer, but can refer yourself at any time by either calling 0808 168 9111 or visiting their website www.victimsupport.org.uk. Burglars do not want to get caught, so taking action to make your home or business premises safe and less attractive to thieves can go a long way to reducing the risk. Not all advice, or security products recommended are the same, or necessarily fit for purpose. If looking to take positive action to prevent yourself from being a victim of this type of crime, help and advice can be found on the Neighbourhood Watch website. If you ever experience this issue or have information regarding an incident, please report it using our online reporting tools at https://www.gwent.police.uk, speak to an operator in our Force Communications Room via our online web chat or call the non-emergency number 101. Alternatively, you can stay 100 per cent anonymous by contacting the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via their untraceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
